Who is SHAW?

After the release of his latest EP “Edge Living”, we wanted to interview the Taiwan-born and American-grown music producer/DJ SHAW to learn more about his creative processes and what really inspires him.

Ghetto Ghetto: What first sparked your interest in producing Electronic Music?

SHAW: “I fell in love with DJing first, and I’ve realized that a good amount of successful DJ brands and projects are more or less producers themselves. The idea is that in order to really go for this passion as a career, it has to be sustainable. The ability to produce goes a long way.”

Ghetto Ghetto: Who/what have been your biggest inspirations for your music? Where do you get inspired the most?

SHAW: “Matroda, Bijou, Dr. Fresch, Marten Horgør, and many many more inspire me in terms of my music. Being able to go to Night Bass events when I was in LA, seeing Volac, Phlegmatic Dogs, Drezo, and the style of music really giving people a good time inspired me a lot as well. I have to say, I get inspired by experiencing life itself, everything is an inspiration really if you let it be.”

Ghetto Ghetto: When you are experiencing a writer’s block, what methods do you use to help yourself overcome, and how do you push through?

SHAW: “I just write, and at least get a solid idea done, even if it doesn’t feel like it, you’re getting better every time you open up your DAW and make something. It’s also ok to make bad music, just make music. Alternatively, I enjoy sports, therefore I would also go for a hike, play a game of pick up in basketball, or pump it out in the gym to clear the head.“

Ghetto Ghetto: What’s it like to live in Berlin?

SHAW: “It’s a lot of getting use to, I’ve been here for a little bit over a month now, and it is definitely growing on me. I love that people really respect creatives and look up to us here. You also get to meet people from all over the world and like-minded people as Berlin is the home of many creatives. There are hidden gems all over the city whether it’s a speakeasy bar or a Turkish food spot. I just had my first Hot Chocolate + Rum last night at a Christmas Market and that was dope.”

Ghetto Ghetto: What’s next for the SHAW project?

SHAW: “I have some more SHAW Originals that I will be sharing with everyone coming 2022, and a handful of collaborations with amazing producers in the game. Look out for the music, 2022 will be fruitful and I will introduce more signature styles and sounds of this project.”
